Reflections on Photography
Philosophy
Photography is a sequence of acts—observing, capturing, and expressing. At its core, however, it is an understanding of moments and light: how the events and emotions of an instant continue through your life and are carried into a wider field of experience.
The ancient Egyptians gave symbolic form to many profoundly abstract ideas, and time was one of them. The ouroboros, a serpent biting its own tail to form a circle, represents recurring alternation and the eternal cycle of time; it is also an origin of the infinity symbol. Once we become deeply aware of time and begin to comprehend it, we understand waxing and waning, the rise and fall of tides, flowers blooming and fading, and the meetings and partings of human life.
Through photography, I continue to awaken to the language of light. The daily shifts between brightness and darkness reveal the interaction of time with all things; they are the traces of what has existed.
Style
Radiant yet sorrowful; completeness already containing absence; the present moment as eternity; contrast, contradiction, and collision.
Whether in the opposing hexagrams of Stagnation and Peace in the I Ching, the flourishing phase of the Twelve Stages of Life, sudden awakening in Zen, or the Japanese sensibility of mono no aware, these ideas form the essence of an Eastern aesthetic:
- Do not seek answers; simply present the state of things.
- See the vast world within the smallest details.
- Let self and object merge; contemplate stillness within change.
